Because everyone needs a blog, apparently. Personally I think everyone needs a pair of Converses. |

Thursday, October 12, 2006 Teenage Kicks "Teenage dreams, so hard to beat" Today is October 12th. In the week I will have been to four gigs, it seems apt that today is John Peel Day. I bought Margrave of the Marshes when I went to Nottingham for the Panthers ice hockey game. I had wanted it for some time because I couldn't believe how little I knew about the legend that is John Peel. In my head I wanted to have it read by today; I have about thirty pages left*. The book is eye opening and possibly just goes to prove that Peel is the greatest DJ in the world** and how much he loved the music he played and the passion he had for it. A true pioneer*** of new music. It's inspiring whilst showing his sense of humour. "Once the children left home, John would sometimes dispatch rations - care packages, if you like - to their respective universities. A typical parcel might comprise a stash of CD's, each bearing a handwritten label. One might read, 'Here's one I think you'll like.' Another would be marked, 'Here's one you should like.' Inevitably there would be one marked, 'Here's one you should pretend to like to annoy people.' (It was usually German hip hop.)" This is the part where I confess to never having heard any of John Peel's shows. I only started listening to Radio 1 about two years ago...was it two? Well whenever Edith was on Celebrity Fame Academy. Then. And in the 90s, well I was a proper pop princess and will admit to you now that I do actually own the whole Steps back catalogue. Hmm, I can't end on that note. I reckon I've probably made up for that by the amount of hours I've spent listening to Radio 1 though. I am going to go finish my book now and will report back on whether I cried when I got to the end, how's that? Though I nearly cried earlier when I realised I was born one day before the tragedy of Heysel. Maybe I just need sleep. Happy John Peel Day. *I would have had it done by now but somehow my addiction to MySpace is back thanks namely to Chris Cox and Colin Murray. **As if it needed proving. ***Pioneer in the proper sense of the word, not like, 'this is a song we pioneered in Germany..."
